Was Earth Hour worthwhile ?

First things first, I want to make it clear that I ma a big supporter of the green cause and environment is a priority for me as it should be for the entire planet. I do support the earth hour initiative as well, in fact I had my lights off yesterday. For about an hour we at home switched everything off and got outside. However, how many of you readers have actually done the same ? I would say not as many. Because a few ‘educated’ friends of ours that we know did not really have their lights turned off.

I am not a supporter of Earth Hour because it will be the only focus for too many.  Turning off lights for one hour is meaningless unless it is coupled with many other longer-term actions. Consider this:  Many will participate in this event and will feel good about being a part of something world-wide.  Most of those will then go about doing their same things without a second thought about making systemic changes that will cause real change to occur.

While there will be a signficant drop in demand in the electrical demand during this one hour period, do any of us think that there will be any drop in electrical production during the same period-NO, there will not. The focus here is should be one of education, process and long-term change, not another feel-good event that will be publicized and talked up by the celebrity types and then forgotten as they hop into their personal jets and energy wasting vehicles.

Let’s think about Earth Month or Earth Year. Let’s work on the fundamentals first. Here is a presentation I had added on Slideshare.net about 2 years ago, that lists out some simple and plausible actions that need to be done.

Unless there is considerable action and really a forward step towards a global political agreement regarding the Earth Hour seems to be another excuse for a T-Shirt with consumerism as well as enough candles burnt that can actually help the cause in other countries where candles are sparse at least. Well, tell me what you think ?

Now your face is your Business Card

[tweetmeme] Interestingly, I wrote about the Augmented Reality Business Card a few days back talking about how Augmented Reality is getting into business cards in ways that makes them more interesting and really awesome. Check out the previous post on the same here. Well now, Polarrose has come up with a solution where one’s face can be used now as a Social Business Card along with TAT (The Astonishing Tribe).

The concept video from Polar Rose on You tube has received over 400,000 views so far as the “Augmented ID” combines Augmented Reality and with Face Recognition, to deliver the worlds first AR application that recognizes people seen by the mobile phone’s camera in realtime and displays icons around their heads with direct links to the person’s profiles on sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Slideshare and others.

The technology is breakthrough because it will help designers now look to more than just the ugly black marks (sort of ugly) to pull up Augmented Information, if it can work with faces (Which are quite complex) they can be used with normal shapes such as brand logos, objects etc.

The first biggest step since the introduction of the Augmented Reality technological previews.

Century and some statistics

This in fact is my 100th post and I wanted to write about it, I have been blogging for a while but not very regularly. However this year I decided to make more of my effort to blog and also thought that I could help people who do not update themselves as they do not have time to just browse for stuff. I know that there are a hundred other things that I can be writing about, but quite frankly technology is closer to my heart. Popular technology, bizarre technology, internet technology as well as just anything related to technology. So I decided to write about it.

It was just a while ago that I was wishing friends ‘Happy new year’ and already it’s the end of the first month in that new year. I am proud to share some statistics for the month on the blog. I know it’s the last day and today’s views will not be counted but going from 100 visitors in a month to over 750 visitors this month, is something of a personal landmark. Which I am very proud of.

Like the movies Avatar makes it big at my blog as well. Followed by Valentine’s Day and Business Cards; interesting precedence of things. So without further adieu I bring you the top posts of this month.

1. Avatar …. the beginning, read on ..

2. This valentines day try the 3D valentine’s Card

3. Awesome new Business Card … Unbelievable

4. Google Search .. you dont know anything

5. Invisible text … made visible for Mobile
