What if the Gods were on Facebook ?

[tweetmeme] These days everyone is on Facebook, young and old. I guess someone thought that it might be a very good Idea to make the Facebook Page with the updates of Ramayan and Mahabharatha. Interestingly, when snooping around I found some more. I have just added these that I found. I think it is hilarious. All this after I first received Ramayan on Facebook by Anup. Thanks Dude ! If used intelligently, GenX can be taught stories using this method I guess, I am sure that they will be able to grasp it better. For the time being its funny and hilarious. Guess my next round should be celebrities. 🙂

Go to FlickrPoet and type a sentence. When you click on the ‘Show Story’ button, FlickrPoet will browse the Flickr database and pull an image for each word/phrase used in your sentence. These images will be organized to provide you with a picture story.

A Story of Easter, Eggs and Geeks

First things first, Happy Easter to one and all, and hope you have a good celebration today. One of the oldest and famous traditions of Easter is of course Easter Eggs, and the idea of Parents hiding the easter eggs for the kids to find it was just something that kinda makes Easter fun for the kids. Dont get me wrong Christmas is still my favourite christian festival. Well what is Easter Eggs doing in a tech blog ? Well, we geeks have a good sense of humour and patience to include all things around us into geeky versions of them. I am talking about Software Eggs, or hidden pieces of code or functionality that shows up when you look for it in a software. If that was confusing then I guess you can check out the definition in Wikipedia:

A virtual Easter egg is an intentional hidden message, in-joke or feature in an object such as a movie, book, CD, DVD, computer program, web page or video game. The term was coined—according to Warren Robinett—by Atari after they were pointed to the secret message left by Robinett in the game Adventure. It draws a parallel with the custom of the Easter egg hunt observed in many Western nations as well as the last Russian imperial family’s tradition of giving elaborately jeweled egg-shaped creations by Carl Fabergé which contained hidden surprises.

Well hoping that is clear I would like to point out some cool Easter Eggs in popular software such you can go out on your own Easter Egg trail. Well these were actually by lifeHacker, I am just reposting for people who might not have had the chance to check it out there.

5 Computer pranks to pull off for April Fool’s Day

or How to mess with a friends computer ??

April Fools day is around the corner, usually people make up tricks to welcome their friends to this wonderful day. Interestingly, with the entry of more technology, it is getting a little more easy to get people fooled. So, I thought I will add in a few tricks for all the folks who read this blog. So well here goes 5 easy tricks that you can use to fool your friends:

1. Optical Mouse Confusion

A small piece of tape over the laser sensor on an optical mouse will cause it to go haywire. Just color the nonstick side of the tape with a marker and then tape it over the lens. This will make the person using the mouse go nearly crazy.

Yes, it’s stupid. It still catches people all the time. We just don’t expect things that simple not to work. Considering that nearly everyone has moved from the roller mouse to the optical mouse.

2. Change the Language Settings on Google

When your friend leaves his/her computer unattended for a minute, quickly go to Google’s home page and click on “Preferences.” There, you can choose the interface language of the search engine. Klingon, Hacker and Yiddish are all excellent choices, but Elmer Fudd is my personal favorite. As Elmer, you can use the Google Diwectowy, perform a Google Seawch or find out if you’re ‘feewing wucky.’

You’ll be amazed how few people realize you can do this. The change-the-language trick also works well on cellphones.

3. The Blue Screen of Death Screensaver

The BlueScreen of Death error in Windows has driven lots of users to the fringe of computer homicide. Tap into the river of pain by installing the BlueScreen of Death Screensaver on a friend’s machine. It’s available at Microsoft’s IT website Technet, but there are several others out there. Just make sure it doesn’t have a real virus.

Bluescreen cycles between different Blue Screens and simulated boots every 15 seconds or so. Virtually all the information shown on Bluescreen’s BSOD and system start screen is obtained from your system configuration – its accuracy will fool even advanced NT developers. For example, the NT build number, processor revision, loaded drivers and addresses, disk drive characteristics, and memory size are all taken from the system Bluescreen is running on. What’s likely to happen? The victim will reboot his machine by hitting the restart button. Hopefully, they didn’t save their work!

4. A joke with Microsoft Word

This is a simple, fun, and mostly harmless joke that you can play on people. It will (hopefully!) drive them crazy as the words that they are typing start to change into strange and bizarre new words and phrases. If you have access to someone’s Word program on their computer then you are all set to go with this prank.

With Microsoft Word open click on Tools -> AutoCorrect Options.

On the AutoCorrect tab type in a word or phrase or name in the “Replace” field, and then put the new word, phrase, or name in the “With” field. In this example I am going to make it so that whenever Bob Anderson types in his name the AutoCorrect feature will give him a new title.

Here is the final result. In the upper part of the picture Bob Anderson’s name appears fine while he is typing it, but as soon as it puts anything after the last letter of his last name (be it a space, comma, period, etc.), Bob Anderson suddenly becomes Bob “King of the Office” Anderson.

You can do quite a bit with this little prank, just remember to keep it something very simple and harmless! You could, if you had the time, add in hundreds of words. But, that would be mean and a pain in the butt to fix, especially if you get caught and have to change it back yourself!

5. The Frozen screen trick

The trick is that when the victim tries to click on an icon on his/her computer the computer will not respond to the clicking. In fact it won’t even highlight the icon.

All you have to do in this step is push the screenshot button on your keyboard. The screenshot button is on the top-right hand corner and says “Print Screen/SysRq” Then you have to paste the picture into paint or any picture editing program. And you have a screen shot. The screenshot you will be taking is of the desktop.

Now all you have to do is change the backround on the desktop to the screenshot and hide the icons. The process is described in the pictures below. Now just sit back, relax and enjoy the show. Try to keep a straight face or else the whole prank will fail.

Why Piracy works ?

[tweetmeme] It is a long debated topic, Software / Movie Piracy industry is growing and people seem to be adopting it very well finding a way to get through all the blocks. But is it just money that is an issue for consumers ? I guess there is an alternative point for why piracy is doing great check out the image below.

10 Alternative uses of Vodka

[tweetmeme] Today’s article is not really to do with technology but Inquisitive nevertheless, its about drinking and vodka. A lot of us drinkers have had the Vodka trip more than once, its one of those drinks that both Men and Women seem to enjoy in all its forms. And as far as rumors go, Vodka does not seem to be the best drink for guys (really need to verify this one) anyway, most people are contended to get smashed with vodka (including me) but some people have tried to do other stuff with it, and believe me the results seem too good to not share (apparently) I stumbled on one of those sites, well here is the list posted there and I am sure a 99% of us will not use vodka for anything but getting smashed, this is for the 1% who do not mind spending that precious liquid on something else 😉

1. Treat Poison Ivy

For many, one of the hazards of enjoying the great outdoors is an encounter with poison ivy. It can lead to a nasty, long-lasting rash. Unfortunately, poison ivy is spreading, thanks to global warming.

To avoid the uncomfortable reaction, immediately pour vodka on skin that has come into contact with poison ivy, and the alcohol will wash away the itchy culprit, urushiol oil. Some have said that the vodka needs to be at least 100 proof to work. Others have argued that straight rubbing alcohol works better, but I’m guessing you may not have that as handy if you are on your average picnic.

2. Freshen Laundry

You can keep your clothes smelling fresher with vodka — really! Simply spritz your duds with the stuff, then hang to dry in a well-ventilated area. (Do a spot-test first to be safe.) Vodka kills odor-causing bacteria, but doesn’t leave a scent when dry.

3. Shine Your Fixtures

It’s easy to get your chrome, glass and porcelain fixtures shining like the top of the Chrysler Building. Guess what does the trick? Moisten a soft, clean cloth with vodka, then apply a little elbow grease.

4. Preserve Flowers

If vodka can help you find love, then it can also help you preserve it — or at least the symbols of it. Add a few drops of vodka and a teaspoon of sugar to the water in your flower vase. It should help keep your flowers fresh longer. Change out the mixture with fresh ingredients daily.

5. Repel Insects

Unless you are intent on proving how hard-core you are, or you have a bizarre fetish, you probably don’t enjoy getting feasted on by insects. But you’ve read media reports questioning the safety of DEET-based repellents, and you are pretty sure you don’t want to take the risk of spraying yourself in the face with poisonous bug killers. Who knew that vodka can kill pesky insects, as well as nagging doubts at the bar? Pour a little of the saucy spirit in a spray bottle and squirt on the little buggers, or yourself as a repellent. But please don’t take aim at any beneficial bees!

6. Soothe Jellyfish Stings

Jellyfish are fascinating, beautiful sea creatures. But their stingers can pack a powerful, painful punch. For vegetarians and others who don’t travel with meat tenderizer (or who don’t feel comfortable asking friends to, um, relieve the pain), take heart. Vodka can also disinfect and alleviate some of the bite of a jellyfish sting.

7. Get Great, Shiny Hair

Vodka doesn’t just make you think people look prettier. It actually can make people prettier. How? Try this remedy for healthier, lush hair: Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo.

8. Clean Away Mold

Got mold? The stuff spreads easily and can severely diminish indoor air quality. Unless you are shacking up with the Crypt Keeper, who wants to look at those grimy dark stains that build up on caulking (sometimes even on mold-resistant varieties)? But instead of harsh chemical sprays, try filling a recycled spray bottle with some bottom-shelf vodka. Spritz on, then let sit for 15 minutes. Scrub away with an old toothbrush (please don’t use your sister’s).

9. Make a Soothing Lavender Tincture

Do you find the scent of lavender soothing? Here’s a fun DIY tip: Fill a clean glass jar with fresh lavender flowers, then top off with vodka. Seal the lid tightly and place in the sun for three days (same idea as making sun tea!). Strain the resulting liquid through a coffee filter, and poof! You have a homemade tincture to rub into aches and pains. You can pour into smaller bottles, decorate them and give them as unique gifts.

10. Ease a Toothache

Got a toothache? Your first priority should be to see a dentist. But sometimes you can’t get an appointment right away, or the professionals tell you it will just have to heal on its own. In that case, try swishing a shot of vodka over the affected area. It can help disinfect, and should numb some of the pain in your gums. I know Neville tried this, the only way it helped is by getting him knocked off and forget about the pain 😉 Well that might be an advantage 🙂
