5 Computer pranks to pull off for April Fool’s Day

or How to mess with a friends computer ??

April Fools day is around the corner, usually people make up tricks to welcome their friends to this wonderful day. Interestingly, with the entry of more technology, it is getting a little more easy to get people fooled. So, I thought I will add in a few tricks for all the folks who read this blog. So well here goes 5 easy tricks that you can use to fool your friends:

1. Optical Mouse Confusion

A small piece of tape over the laser sensor on an optical mouse will cause it to go haywire. Just color the nonstick side of the tape with a marker and then tape it over the lens. This will make the person using the mouse go nearly crazy.

Yes, it’s stupid. It still catches people all the time. We just don’t expect things that simple not to work. Considering that nearly everyone has moved from the roller mouse to the optical mouse.

2. Change the Language Settings on Google

When your friend leaves his/her computer unattended for a minute, quickly go to Google’s home page and click on “Preferences.” There, you can choose the interface language of the search engine. Klingon, Hacker and Yiddish are all excellent choices, but Elmer Fudd is my personal favorite. As Elmer, you can use the Google Diwectowy, perform a Google Seawch or find out if you’re ‘feewing wucky.’

You’ll be amazed how few people realize you can do this. The change-the-language trick also works well on cellphones.

3. The Blue Screen of Death Screensaver

The BlueScreen of Death error in Windows has driven lots of users to the fringe of computer homicide. Tap into the river of pain by installing the BlueScreen of Death Screensaver on a friend’s machine. It’s available at Microsoft’s IT website Technet, but there are several others out there. Just make sure it doesn’t have a real virus.

Bluescreen cycles between different Blue Screens and simulated boots every 15 seconds or so. Virtually all the information shown on Bluescreen’s BSOD and system start screen is obtained from your system configuration – its accuracy will fool even advanced NT developers. For example, the NT build number, processor revision, loaded drivers and addresses, disk drive characteristics, and memory size are all taken from the system Bluescreen is running on. What’s likely to happen? The victim will reboot his machine by hitting the restart button. Hopefully, they didn’t save their work!

4. A joke with Microsoft Word

This is a simple, fun, and mostly harmless joke that you can play on people. It will (hopefully!) drive them crazy as the words that they are typing start to change into strange and bizarre new words and phrases. If you have access to someone’s Word program on their computer then you are all set to go with this prank.

With Microsoft Word open click on Tools -> AutoCorrect Options.

On the AutoCorrect tab type in a word or phrase or name in the “Replace” field, and then put the new word, phrase, or name in the “With” field. In this example I am going to make it so that whenever Bob Anderson types in his name the AutoCorrect feature will give him a new title.

Here is the final result. In the upper part of the picture Bob Anderson’s name appears fine while he is typing it, but as soon as it puts anything after the last letter of his last name (be it a space, comma, period, etc.), Bob Anderson suddenly becomes Bob “King of the Office” Anderson.

You can do quite a bit with this little prank, just remember to keep it something very simple and harmless! You could, if you had the time, add in hundreds of words. But, that would be mean and a pain in the butt to fix, especially if you get caught and have to change it back yourself!

5. The Frozen screen trick

The trick is that when the victim tries to click on an icon on his/her computer the computer will not respond to the clicking. In fact it won’t even highlight the icon.

All you have to do in this step is push the screenshot button on your keyboard. The screenshot button is on the top-right hand corner and says “Print Screen/SysRq” Then you have to paste the picture into paint or any picture editing program. And you have a screen shot. The screenshot you will be taking is of the desktop.

Now all you have to do is change the backround on the desktop to the screenshot and hide the icons. The process is described in the pictures below. Now just sit back, relax and enjoy the show. Try to keep a straight face or else the whole prank will fail.
